Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.

The following approach to the Pentagram Formulae is evolved and applied in the context of the Ritual of the Stars, and is given to Members of the First Order who are using the System of Initiation offered through the Sanctuary of Thoth.  The ceremonial approach to these formulae is different than what has traditionally been taught.  This has been given as an evolution of the rituals of “old”, as a more modern approach which is “user friendly” by all Children of the Light.

The Pentagram is a symbol which forms a basis of initiation into the First Order of the Great Order of the Universe.  The Pentagram Formulae are also a key to understanding and working with other magickal formulae.

The Pentagram Formula is initially used to establish Holy Space and to open the Holy Temple.  It is used to bring order to your Sphere, to “separate” and organize the elements therein so they may operate more efficiently in accord with their own nature, and so Spirit may descend in the midst to redeem, equilibrate and inform the elements.

A basic, but important, Pentagram Formula is learned by the Childe of Earth.  Then, each point of the Pentagram is addressed in turn.  The Childe of Malkuth works with the element of Earth and the Elemental Earth Pentagram.  The Childe of Yesod works with the element of Air and the Elemental Air Pentagram.  The Childe of Hod works with the element of Water and the Elemental Water Pentagram.  The Childe of Netzach works with the element of Fire and the Elemental Fire Pentagram.  The Dominis Liminis works with Spirit and the Spirit Pentagrams.

A Pentagram Ritual may be used to evoke the elements within your Sphere, so you may purify and consecrate them to the Great Work, get to know them through direct experience and then reassimilate them.  As the Childe’s initiation progresses, the Sphere becomes organized from an elemental perspective on an initiated basis.  This evolves as higher initiation occurs.

The “Traditional” and “Thelemic” formulae or approach to organizing a Pentagram Ritual are discussed below.  You are encouraged to experiment with both formulae.  You may find that you prefer one formula over the other or that one formula seems to produce better results for certain types of work than the other.  For example, you may find that the Traditional formula serves you better in working directly with the elements (or an element), but the Thelemic formula serves you better for more general types of workings or in performing Path workings.  This, however, is something for you to decide based on your own experiences.

The Pentagram is a “key”.  It is a means of gaining control of the elements within your Sphere, which is symbolized by your Magick Circle.  Seek to rightly formulate your Sphere using the Pentagram.  Pray to the Holy Guardian Angel for initiation.  Ask and you shall receive.  And always give thanks.

May you use these gifts wisely and well.

Yours in the Great Work,

Frater AHBH AL, as Scribe

Pentagram Formulae for the Childe of Earth

            Traditional Formula:

            1.         Face east, and trace the Holy Cross of the Crown.  (See the Ritual of the Crown for instructions.)

2.         Formulate the floor of your Sphere, visualizing a Magick Circle around you with an “X” in the Circle connecting to the edge.  You stand in the center of the “X”.

3.         Stand with hands in prayer position over the solar plexus.

4.         Formulate a Pentagram of Blue-White Light over your body, so that the top center point extends out of your praying hands, the middle points extend over your shoulders, and the bottom points extend through your hips.  Take note that this is actually being formulated on your embodied Tree of Life (White Pillar of Mercy on your left, Middle Pillar down your median line, Black Pillar of Severity on your right).  Hold this visualization of the Pentagram as firmly as possible until Step 9 below.  Let it blaze brightly!

5.         Focus on the quadrant before you (formed by the “X”), think of the color yellow (assigning it to this quadrant) and say “YHVH” (pronounced Yod-Heh-Vau-Heh).

6.         Focus on the quadrant to the right of you, think of the color red (assigning it to this quadrant) and say “ADNI” (pronounced Adonai).

7.         Focus on the quadrant behind you, think of the color blue (assigning it to this quadrant) and say “AHIH” (pronounced Eheieh).

8.         Focus on the quadrant to the left of you, think of the color green (assigning it to this quadrant) and say “AGLA” (pronounced Agla).  Note that “AGLA” is a notaricon for the Hebrew phrase Ateh Gibor le-olam Adonai, meaning “To Thee be the Power unto the Ages, my Lord”.

9.         Bring your focus to the east again (completing the Circle), make the Sign of Silence, absorbing the Pentagram into your chest and allowing it to shine brightly.

10.       Make the Sign of Triumph, taking note of the organization of your Sphere.

11.       Trace the Holy Cross of the Crown.

Proceed to purify and consecrate your Circle with Water and Fire.  This purifies and consecrates the elements within your Sphere to the Great Work.

Perform any other magickal or mystical work on your agenda, always remembering to equilibrate.

To close your working, repeat the Ritual (Steps 1 through 11), give a License to Depart, and end all in the Sign of Silence absorbing all energies within your Sphere in the process to return your Sphere to “normal” operating condition.

Go forth, transformed, into the World of Man.

Thelemic Formula:

            1.         Face east, and trace the Holy Cross of the Crown.

Take note that this is actually being formulated on your embodied Tree of Life (White Pillar on your left, Middle Pillar down your median line, Black Pillar on your right).  Hold this visualization of the Pentagram as firmly as possible until Step 9 below.  Let it blaze brightly!

5.         Focus on the quadrant before you (formed by the “X”), think of the color green (assigning it to this quadrant) and say “THERION”.

6.         Focus on the quadrant to the left of you, think of the color yellow (assigning it to this quadrant) and say “NUIT”.

7.         Focus on the quadrant behind you, think of the color blue (assigning it to this quadrant) and say quietly “BABALON”.

8.         Focus on the quadrant to the right of you, think of the color red (assigning it to this quadrant) and say loudly “HADIT”.

9.         Bring your focus to the east again (completing your Circle), make the Sign of Silence, absorbing the Pentagram into your chest and allowing it to shine brightly.

10.       Make the Sign of Triumph, taking note of the organization of your Sphere.

11.       Trace the Holy Cross of the Crown.

Proceed to purify and consecrate your Circle with Water and Fire.  In addition to what is said above, this prepares your Sphere for other work.

Perform any other magickal or mystical work on your agenda, always remembering to equilibrate.

To close your working, repeat the Ritual (Steps 1 through 11), give a License to Depart, and end all in the Sign of Silence absorbing all energies in your Sphere in the process to return your Sphere to “normal” operating condition.

Go forth, transformed, into the World of Man.

            Ritual Notes:

·        A Pentagram Ritual may be performed mentally or physically with equal success.  It is best to learn to perform the Ritual both ways (if you are able), so you are prepared to perform the Ritual any time as circumstances permit.  Learning to perform the Ritual mentally will also assist you in learning about and working in your Body of Light.

·        You may face east from the center during the entire Ritual, as indicated above.  There is no need to leave the center.  Alternatively, you may turn to each quarter from the center as you address that quarter (in Steps 6 through 9).  This, however, is unnecessary.  Proceed as you will.  Simply “displaying” the Pentagram as described above will “get the job done”.

·        It is necessary to formulate the Pentagram.  To assist the visualization, you may also trace the Pentagram.  If you choose to trace the Pentagram, for the Childe of Earth, it is recommended that you use only the Banishing Earth Pentagram, which is traced from the bottom left (Earth) point up to the top center (Spirit) point, and proceeding from there.

·        As an alternative to hands in prayer position, you may make the Sign of the Enterer (also known as the Sign of Projection or the Sign of Horus).  This is made by standing feet together with heals touching, drawing the hands (palms down) back to the ears, and then taking a step forward with the left foot about a foot or two (depending on your size) while extending the arms forward and bringing the head down to look straight forward between the hands.

·        The Sign of Silence (also known as the Sign of Harpocrates or Hoor-Pa-Kraat) is made by standing left foot at a 45 degree or so angle, placing the heal of the right foot in the arch of the left foot, taking the left index finger or thumb, pointing it straight up your median line, resting it against your bottom lip, and raising the elbow to create a horizontal line with the left shoulder.  As you do so, take a deep breath in, absorb, expand, hold the breath and then release the breath sweeping the left hand down in a graceful motion so the arm is straight and the hand is behind the buttocks.  As you make the Sign of Silence, try to firmly see yourself as if you backed up against the image shown on Atu XX of the Thoth Tarot Deck.  This will greatly aid your work.

·        The Sign of Triumph (also known as the Sign of Typhon or the Sign of the Trident) is made by standing as you did in the Sign of Silence (left foot at a 45 degree or so angle, placing the heal of the right foot in the arch of the left foot), making two fists at the solar plexus (palms towards the body) and then thrusting the hands up (opening them in the process) to fully extend the arms in the form of a “V” with palms out.  Note that Typhon is the dragon of ignorance and perversion, and the devourer of souls.  Typhon signifies the lower worlds, which swallow up the spiritual nature of the individual who, being imperfect, is forced to descend from the higher spheres and be reborn into the physical world.  To be swallowed up by Typhon signifies the process of rebirth, from which man can release himself only by vanquishing this mortal adversary.  Hermes is frequently pictured with one foot on the back of Typhon, for He has conquered Typhon by His Wisdom.  Be thou Hermes, and conquer Typhon in your practice of the Royal Art and Science of Magick!

·        The Signs of Projection, Silence and Triumph fulfill certain Magickal Formulae, and are known as the Three-Fold Signs of Horus, the Crowned and Conquering Childe.

·        To purify your Magick Circle with Water, take a cup of water, breath on it (filling it with Life and Love), then move to the east and say – “So, therefore, the Priest(ess) that governeth the works of Fire must first sprinkle with the Lustral Water of the loud, resounding Sea”.  Trace the Holy Cross of the Crown before you with the cup, dip your fingers it the Water, sprinkle three times in the center of the Cross, then move in the direction of the Pentagram formula you are using (clockwise if using the Traditional formula or counter-clockwise if using the Thelemic formula), doing the same thing in each quadrant, then return past the east to complete your Circle, move to the center of your Circle, face east, dip your fingers in the Water, trace the Holy Cross of the Crown on your body (as given in the Ritual of the Crown), then dip your fingers in the Water again and sprinkle at your heart center, genital area and feet (Tiphareth, Yesod and Malkuth on the embodied Tree of Life), raise the cup on high and say “I purify with the Holy Water and Love”, lowering the cup in the process.  Put down the cup.  To purify without using physical water, simply make a cup with your hands, breath into this cup, raise the cup upon high in the center of your circle, say “I purify with the Holy Water and Love”; as you do so, bring your hands down and see the Holy Water swirling about in Blue Light purifying ever aspect of your Sphere and all within your Magick Circle.  These images will also assist in any purifications you perform physically.

·        To consecrate your Magick Circle with Fire, take some incense, hold your hands over the incense for a moment (filling them with Liberty and Light), then move to the east and say – “When all phantoms have vanished, thou shall see the Holy Formless Fire, that Fire which darts and flashes through the hidden depths of the Universe, hear thou the Voice of Fire!”  Trace the Holy Cross of the Crown before you with the Incense, wave the Incense three times in the center of the Cross, then move in the direction of the Pentagram formula you are using (clockwise if using the Traditional formula or counter-clockwise if using the Thelemic formula), doing the same thing in each quadrant, then return past the east to complete your Circle, move to the center of your Circle, face east, trace the Holy Cross of the Crown with the Incense before your body (as given in the Ritual of the Crown and being careful not to burn), wave the Incense towards your heart center, genital area and feet (Tiphareth, Yesod and Malkuth on the embodied Tree of Life), raise the Incense upon high and say “I consecrate with the Holy Fire and Light”, lowering the Incense in the process.  Put down the Incense.  To consecrate without using incense, simply make a triangle by bringing the index finger and thumb of your hands together (point up), raise your hands in the form of the triangle upon high in the center of your Circle, and say “I consecrate with the Holy Fire and Light”; as you do so, bring your hands down and see the Holy Fire swirling about in Red Brilliant Light consecrating ever aspect of your Sphere and all within your Circle to the Great Work.  These images will also assist in any consecrations you perform physically.

·         A License to Depart may be given by saying the following:  “All spirits heretofore called, ere ye depart to your pleasant realms and abodes.  May there be peace between me and thee.  May the blessings of the Most High be upon thee.  My blessings are with thee.  And do thee come again when ye are so invoked and called.  Blessed be.  93!  Go in peace.”

·        Always remember to end all in the Sign of Silence.  Amen.

The foregoing is sufficient information to permit a new aspirant to immediately take up the work, perform a Pentagram Ritual and begin the aspirant’s own experiments in the hermetic sciences, so the aspirant may learn the Royal Art and Science of Magick through direct experience and make progress on the Royal Path of Initiation.

We shall now discuss the natural evolution of the Pentagram formulae given above.

Pentagram Formulae for the Childe of Malkuth

The Childe of Malkuth is to work with the element of Earth from the perspective of Malkuth and the Elemental Earth Pentagram (among the other Stars and Symbols given in the Scroll of the Ritual of the Stars and the Guide to the Oaths of Initiation).

To generally invoke the element of Earth, you may proceed as follows:

1.         Perform a Pentagram Ritual for the Childe of Earth as described above (otherwise known as a “Banishing Earth Pentagram Ritual”).  This generally prepares your Holy Space and opens the Holy Temple to higher planes.  When performing this Step, focus on rising in your Sphere of Consciousness from the mundane plane of Earth to the Spiritual Sphere of Malkuth.  Continue to hold these visualizations of your Sphere and those of your Magick Circle (described above as the “X” in the Circle, with the elements organized in the quadrants, but now from the perspective of Malkuth) throughout your entire working until the Sign of Silence in Step 10 below.  You are working on the Tree of Life in Malkuth, which will also be represented on the floor of your Sphere.

            2.         Purify and consecrate your Circle with Water and Fire.  Instructions are provided in the “Ritual Notes” above.

3.         Face east.  Directly in the center of your Circle, trace a single Invoking Earth Pentagram in Green Light.  This is done by starting at the top (Spirit) point, moving down to the bottom left (Earth) point, and then proceeding from there.  (As you become familiar with this Pentagram, you may simply formulate it in Green Light without tracing it.)

4.         Make the Sign of Horus, or with praying hands, project into the Pentagram while calling the Divine Hierarchy for the Element of Earth, which is as follows:

Adonai (Atziluthic)

Auriel (Briatic)

Phorlakh (Yitziratic)

Kerub (Assiatic)

5.         Return in the Sign of Silence, but do not absorb this Pentagram.  Let is stand as a beacon shining forth the Element of Earth you have evoked from within and invoked from all quarters of your Sphere.

6.         Make the Sign of Triumph to declare that you are conquering Typhon. (See yourself with one foot on the back of the Typhon, whose image is a fire-breathing crocodile like dragon.)  Equilibrate, and perform any other work on your agenda.

7.         When you are ready to close, trace (or otherwise formulate) a Banishing Earth Pentagram in Green Light over the Invoking Earth Pentagram beaming in the center of your Sphere.  This is to equilibrate the active against the passive.

8.         Make the Sign of Silence to absorb these Earth Pentagrams.

9.         Pray to the Holy Guardian Angel for initiation, and give thanks (if you have not already done so).

10.       Close by repeating the Banishing Earth Pentagram Ritual (using the same formula used in Step 1), give a License to Depart, and end all in the Sign of Silence absorbing all energies in your Sphere in the process to return your Sphere to “normal” operating condition.

11.       Go forth, transformed, into the World of Man.

To work with the Zodiacal aspects of the element of Earth (to come to further know the cardinal, fixed and mutual aspects of the element, not to mention other aspects), you would simply proceed as described above, but would trace (or otherwise formulate) the appropriate Zodiacal symbol (which is its Sigil) in the center of the Pentagrams referred to in Steps 3 and 7 above.  No other changes to the Ritual are necessary.  The cardinal, fixed and mutual signs of Earth are Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo, respectively.

To invoke a “sub-element” of Earth (such as “Earth of Earth”, “Air of Earth”, “Water of Earth” or “Fire of Earth”), the same formula described above would be used.  However, instead of tracing (or otherwise formulating) the Invoking Earth Pentagram in the center of your Circle (as described in Step 3 above), you would first face and move into the quadrant assigned to the sub-element according to the Pentagram formula you are using, and perform Steps 3 through 6 in that quadrant.  The Banishing Earth Pentagram described in Step 7 above would also be traced (or otherwise formulated) in that quadrant, and the Sign of Silence in Step 8 would also be given in that quadrant.  The Ritual would otherwise proceed as described above.

Images of the floor of your Sphere will evolve as your initiation into the Sephiroth and Paths on the Tree of Life progresses.  At this stage of the work, simply do your best.  Focusing on the visualizations given above will suffice.  We proceed.

Pentagram Formulae for the Childe of Yesod

The Childe of Yesod is to work with the element of Air from the perspective of Yesod and the Elemental Air Pentagram (among the other Stars and Symbols given in the Scroll of the Ritual of the Stars and the Guide to the Oaths of Initiation).

To generally invoke the element of Air, you may proceed as follows:

1.         Perform a Pentagram Ritual for the Childe of Earth as described above (which again will be referred to as a “Banishing Earth Pentagram Ritualthis suggests something to be gleaned).  As indicated above, this generally prepares your Holy Space and opens the Holy Temple to higher planes.  When performing this Step, focus on rising in your Sphere of Consciousness from the mundane plane of Earth to the Spiritual Sphere of Yesod.  Continue to hold these visualizations of your Sphere and those of your Magick Circle (described above as the “X” in the Circle, with the elements organized in the quadrants, but now from the perspective of Yesod) throughout your entire working until the Sign of Silence in Step 10 below.  You are now working on the Tree of Life in Yesod, which will also be represented on the floor of your Sphere.

            2.         Purify and consecrate your Circle with Water and Fire, as described above.

3.         Face east.  Directly in the center of your Circle, trace a single Invoking Air Pentagram in Yellow Light.  This is done by starting at the middle right (Water) point, moving across to the middle left (Air) point, and then proceeding from there.  (As you become familiar with this Pentagram, you may simply formulate it in Yellow Light without tracing it.)

4.         Make the Sign of Horus, or with praying hands, project into the Pentagram while calling the Divine Hierarchy for the Element of Air, which is as follows:

YHVH (Atziluthic)

Raphael (Briatic)

Chassan (Yitziratic)

Ariel (Assiatic)

5.         Return in the Sign of Silence, but do not absorb this Pentagram.  Let is stand as a beacon shining forth the Element of Air you have evoked from within and invoked from all quarters of your Sphere.

6.         Make the Sign of Triumph to declare that you are progressing in your conquest of Typhon. (See yourself with one foot on the back of this mighty dragon.)  Equilibrate, and perform any other work on your agenda.

7.         When you are ready to close, trace (or otherwise formulate) a Banishing Air Pentagram in Yellow Light over the Invoking Air Pentagram beaming in the center of your Sphere.  This is to equilibrate the active against the passive.  The Banishing Air Pentagram is traced by starting at the middle left (Air) point, moving across to the middle right (Water) point, and then proceeding from there.  (As you become familiar with this Pentagram, you may simply formulate it in Yellow Light without tracing it.)

8.         Make the Sign of Silence to absorb these Air Pentagrams.

To work with the Zodiacal aspects of the element of Air (to come to further know the cardinal, fixed and mutual aspects of the element, not to mention other aspects), you would simply proceed as described above, but would trace (or otherwise formulate) the appropriate Zodiacal symbol (which is its Sigil) in the center of the Pentagrams referred to in Steps 3 and 7 above.  No other changes to the Ritual are necessary.  The cardinal, fixed and mutual signs of Air are Libra, Aquarius and Gemini, respectively.

To invoke a “sub-element” of Air (such as “Earth of Air”, “Air of Air”, “Water of Air” or “Fire of Air”), the same formula described above would be used.  However, instead of tracing (or otherwise formulating) the Invoking Air Pentagram in the center of your Circle (as described in Step 3 above), you would first face and move into the quadrant assigned to the sub-element according to the Pentagram formula you are using, and perform Steps 3 through 6 in that quadrant.  The Banishing Air Pentagram described in Step 7 above would also be traced (or otherwise formulated) in that quadrant, and the Sign of Silence in Step 8 would also be given in that quadrant.  The Ritual would otherwise proceed as described above.

As your initiation progresses, the floor of your Sphere will evolve to lift you higher up the Qabalistic Tree of Life.  If you are structuring your work according to the Guide to the Oaths of Initiation (which is recommended if you are using the System of Initiation offered through the Sanctuary of Thoth), your initiation as a Childe of Yesod will evolve to include initiation into the Paths on the Tree of Life which will allow the Rainbow of Promise (otherwise known as the Bow of QShTh) to begin to formulate.  Holy, holy, holy is this Bow on which is loosed the Arrow to be shot into the heart of the Holy Guardian Angel.  We proceed.

Pentagram Formulae for the Childe of Hod

The Childe of Hod is to work with the element of Water from the perspective of Hod and the Elemental Water Pentagram (among the other Stars and Symbols given in the Scroll of the Ritual of the Stars and the Guide to the Oaths of Initiation).

To generally invoke the element of Water, you may proceed as follows:

1.         Perform a Pentagram Ritual for the Childe of Earth as described above (which for important reasons is called a “Banishing Earth Pentagram Ritual” as noted above).  It is repeated that this generally prepares your Holy Space and opens the Holy Temple to higher planes.  When performing this Step, focus on rising in your Sphere of Consciousness from the mundane plane of Earth to the Spiritual Sphere of Hod.  Continue to hold these visualizations of your Sphere and those of your Magick Circle (described above as the “X” in the Circle, with the elements organized in the quadrants, but now from the perspective of Hod) throughout your entire working until the Sign of Silence in Step 10 below.  You are now working on the Tree of Life in Hod, which will also be represented on the floor of your Sphere.

            2.         Purify and consecrate your Circle with Water and Fire, as described above.

3.         Face east.  Directly in the center of your Circle, trace a single Invoking Water Pentagram in Blue Light.  This is done by starting at the middle left (Air) point, moving across to the middle right (Water) point, and then proceeding from there.  (As you become familiar with this Pentagram, you may simply formulate it in Blue Light without tracing it.)

4.         Make the Sign of Horus, or with praying hands, project into the Pentagram while calling the Divine Hierarchy for the Element of Water, which is as follows:

AL (Atziluthic)

Gabriel (Briatic)

Taliahad (Yitziratic)

Tharsis (Assiatic)

5.         Return in the Sign of Silence, but do not absorb this Pentagram.  Let is stand as a beacon shining forth the Element of Water you have evoked from within and invoked from all quarters of your Sphere.

6.         Make the Sign of Triumph to declare that you are conquering Typhon in your practice of the Royal Art and Science of Magick.  Be Hermes!  Equilibrate, and perform any other work on your agenda.

7.         When you are ready to close, trace (or otherwise formulate) a Banishing Water Pentagram in Blue Light over the Invoking Water Pentagram beaming in the center of your Sphere.  To repeat, this is to equilibrate the active against the passive.  The Banishing Water Pentagram is traced by starting at the middle right (Water) point, moving across to the middle left (Air) point, and then proceeding from there.  (As you become familiar with this Pentagram, you may simply formulate it in Blue Light without tracing it.)

8.         Make the Sign of Silence to absorb these Water Pentagrams.

9.         Pray to the Holy Guardian Angel for initiation, and give thanks (if you have not already done so).

10.       Close by repeating the Banishing Earth Pentagram Ritual (using the same formula used in Step 1), give a License to Depart, and end all in the Sign of Silence absorbing all energies in your Sphere to return your Sphere to “normal” operating condition.

11.       Go forth, transformed, into the World of Man.

To work with the Zodiacal aspects of the element of Water (to come to further know the cardinal, fixed and mutual aspects of the element, not to mention other aspects), you would simply proceed as described above, but would trace (or otherwise formulate) the appropriate Zodiacal symbol (which is its Sigil) in the center of the Pentagrams referred to in Steps 3 and 7 above.  No other changes to the Ritual are necessary.  The cardinal, fixed and mutual signs of Water are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, respectively.

To invoke a “sub-element” of Water (such as “Earth of Water”, “Air of Water”, “Water of Water” or “Fire of Water”), the same formula described above would be used.  However, instead of tracing (or otherwise formulating) the Invoking Water Pentagram in the center of your Circle (as described in Step 3 above), you would first face and move into the quadrant assigned to the sub-element according to the Pentagram formula you are using, and perform Steps 3 through 6 in that quadrant.  The Banishing Water Pentagram described in Step 7 above would also be traced (or otherwise formulated) in that quadrant, and the Sign of Silence in Step 8 would also be given in that quadrant.  The Ritual would otherwise proceed as described above.

During your work as a Childe of Hod, your Sphere will be nearing Tiphareth on an initiated basis.  This is an important and beautiful phase of the work.  Remember that when Mercury looks at the Sun, he becomes the Sun!   We proceed.

Pentagram Formulae for the Childe of Netzach

The Childe of Netzach is to work with the element of Fire from the perspective of Netzach and the Elemental Fire Pentagram (among the other Stars and Symbols given in the Scroll of the Ritual of the Stars and the Guide to the Oaths of Initiation).

To generally invoke the element of Fire, you may proceed as follows:

1.         Perform a Pentagram Ritual for the Childe of Earth as described above (which we repeat is a “Banishing Earth Pentagram Ritual”).  This again prepares your Holy Space and open the Holy Temple to higher planes.  When performing this Step, focus on rising in your Sphere of Consciousness from the mundane plane of Earth to the Spiritual Sphere of Netzach.  Continue to hold these visualizations of your Sphere and those of your Magick Circle (described above as the “X” in the Circle, with the elements organized in the quadrants, but now from the perspective of Netzach) throughout your entire working until the Sign of Silence in Step 10 below.  You are now working on the Tree of Life in Netzach, which will also be represented on the floor of your Sphere.

            2.         Purify and consecrate your Circle with Water and Fire, as described above.

3.         Face east.  Directly in the center of your Circle, trace a single Invoking Fire Pentagram in Flaming Red Light.  This is done by starting at the top (Spirit) point, moving down to the bottom right (Fire) point, and then proceeding from there.  (As you become familiar with this Pentagram, you may simply formulate it in Flaming Red Light without tracing it.)

4.         Make the Sign of Horus, or with praying hands, project into the Pentagram while calling the Divine Hierarchy for the Element of Fire, which is as follows:

Elohim (Atziluthic)

Mikhael (Briatic)

Aral (Yitziratic)

Seraph (Assiatic)

5.         Return in the Sign of Silence, but do not absorb this Pentagram.  Let is stand as a beacon shining forth the Element of Fire you have evoked from within and invoked from all quarters of your Sphere.

6.         Make the Sign of Triumph to declare that you are conquering Typhon in your quest for Spirit and the Knowledge and Conversation of your Holy Guardian Angel!  Equilibrate, and perform any other work on your agenda.

7.         When you are ready to close, trace (or otherwise formulate) a Banishing Fire Pentagram in Flaming Red Light over the Invoking Fire Pentagram beaming in the center of your Sphere.  You equilibrate the active against the passive.   The Banishing Fire Pentagram is traced by starting at the bottom right (Fire) point, moving to the top (Spirit) point, and then proceeding from there.  (As you become familiar with this Pentagram, you may simply formulate it in Blue Light without tracing it.)

8.         Make the Sign of Silence to absorb these Fire Pentagrams.

To work with the Zodiacal aspects of the element of Fire (to come to further know the cardinal, fixed and mutual aspects of the element, not to mention other aspects), you would simply proceed as described above, but would trace (or otherwise formulate) the appropriate Zodiacal symbol (which is its Sigil) in the center of the Pentagrams referred to in Steps 3 and 7 above.  No other changes to the Ritual are necessary.  The cardinal, fixed and mutual signs of Fire are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, respectively.

To invoke a “sub-element” of Fire (such as “Earth of Fire”, “Air of Fire”, “Water of Fire” or “Fire of Fire”), the same formula described above would be used.  However, instead of tracing (or otherwise formulating) the Invoking Fire Pentagram in the center of your Circle (as described in Step 3 above), you would first face and move into the quadrant assigned to the sub-element according to the Pentagram formula you are using, and perform Steps 3 through 6 in that quadrant.  The Banishing Fire Pentagram described in Step 7 above would also be traced (or otherwise formulated) in that quadrant, and the Sign of Silence in Step 8 would also be given in that quadrant.  The Ritual would otherwise proceed as described above.

By the end of your work as a Childe of Netzach, you initiation will have progressed to such a point that your Sphere will now fully formulate on an initiated basis as described in the Scroll of the Ritual of the Stars for this stage of the work.  This is an important aspect of the work, critical to the future progress of the new Dominis Liminis who works with Spirit and completes the initial formula of the Pentagram.  We proceed.

Pentagram Formulae for the Dominis Liminis

The Dominis Liminis works with Spirit and the Spirit Pentagrams (among the other Stars and Symbols given in the Scroll of the Ritual of the Stars and the Guide to the Oaths of Initiation).  Now is the time when all the other Pentagram work comes together to organize the Sphere on an elemental and Sephirotic basis so Spirit may descend in the midst to redeem, equilibrate and inform the elements.  The Dominis Liminis focuses the Eye first on Spirit and then on the initial work to attain the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel.  Spirit is the “elemental” aspect of the work, as the aspirant seeks to rise through the Veil of Paroketh.  The Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel is the Sephirotic aspect, as the aspirant seeks to attain to the Second Order and the Spiritual Sphere of Tiphareth, which is the abode of the Holy Guardian Angel.  Initiation into Spirit must precede this Sephirotic aspect.

Before proceeding to the Ritual, consider that the Sephiroth and Paths on the Tree of Life are Divine, and that the elements are blind forces through which Divinity moves.  The floor of your Sphere is lifting you up the Tree of Life, and is formulated as described in the Scroll of the Ritual of the Stars.  Take some time to contemplate this and the floor of your Sphere.  Your Sphere of Consciousness is being lifted up the Tree of Life by none other than the Hand of your God.  When you invoke Spirit, you are invoking the Spiritual aspect of the Macrocosmic Tree of Life (also referred to as the “Great Tree” in the Guide to the Oaths of Initiation) on which your Sphere is being placed during the working.  This is of a general nature on the Spiritual or Macrocosmic Plane.  It is not Sephira specific.  (The Yitziratic Hexagrams are used to work directly with the Sephiroth and Paths on the Yitziratic Tree of Life.)

The goal of the Dominis Liminis is to consciously link the embodied Microcosmic Tree of Life (also referred to as the “Little Tree” in the Guide to the Oaths of Initiation) with the Great Tree.  This is done by a three-step process.  The first step is to organize the elements within your Sphere according to one of the Pentagram formulae, which you have learned in your prior work.  The second step is to Spiritualize the elements within your Sphere.  All must be placed in service of Spirit!  Let these words ring in your ears at this stage of the Work.  The third step is to formulate the Pillars of the Great Tree within your Sphere on an initiated basis at this stage of the work, and move through them.

Once the Pillars of the Great Tree have formulated within your Sphere, consider also that there is Holy Unity above the Abyss (and relativity below the Abyss).  In the Guide to the Oaths of Initiation, it is recommended that you look up the Pillars of the Great Tree and down the Pillars of the embodied Little Tree.  The reason for this is that the Trees are united above the Abyss by the Crown, which is ever one and can never be divided (as indicated in the Ritual of the Crown).  This assists in illustrating through imagery an aspect of the work of the Dominis Liminis, which is to consciously link the source of the Childe’s aspiration to the Macrocosm.

As a Dominis Liminis, your perspective of the World and the Universe will change dramatically.  You will attain a Macrocosmic view of things.  The Pentagram Formulae for the Dominis Liminis will assist you in attaining this at the appropriate stage of the work.

To invoke Spirit, you may proceed as follows:

1.         Perform a Pentagram Ritual for the Childe of Earth as described above (which, as you know, is called a “Banishing Earth Pentagram Ritual”).  We repeat this simply to stress the phase, which has meaning, and to continually remind that this prepares your Holy Space and opens the Holy Temple to higher planes.  When performing this Step, focus on rising in your Sphere of Consciousness from the mundane plane of Earth to generally formulate the floor of your Sphere on the Macrocosmic Tree as described in the Scroll of the Ritual of the Stars for the Pentagram formula you are using.  Continue to hold these visualizations of your Sphere and those of your Magick Circle (described above as the “X” in the Circle, with the elements organized in the quadrants) throughout the working until otherwise noted below.

            2.         Purify and consecrate your Circle with Water and Fire, as described above.

3.         Face east.  The Altar (physical or visualized) is in the center of your Circle.  You stand at the foot of the Altar (which here is in the west facing east).  When you are ready, move with intention to a place before the Altar in the east facing east.

4.         Directly before you, and slightly to your right, trace an Invoking Active Spirit Pentagram in Brilliant White Light.  This is done by beginning at the bottom right (Fire) point and moving across to the middle left (Air) point, and proceeding from there.  (As you become familiar with this Pentagram, you may simply formulate it in Brilliant White Light without tracing it.)  This Spiritualizes the active elements of Fire and Air, which you will have already been initiated in from the current perspective at this stage of the work.

5.         Make the Sign of Horus, or with praying hands, project into this Pentagram while calling the Holy Name “AHIH” (pronounced Eheieh).  As you do so, formulate the Macrocosmic White Pillar of Mercy in the place of this Pentagram.

6.         Remaining where you are, and slightly to your left, trace an Invoking Passive Spirit Pentagram in Brilliant White Light.  This is done by beginning at the bottom left (Earth) point and moving across to the middle right (Water) point, and proceeding from there.  (As you become familiar with this Pentagram, you may simply formulate it in Brilliant White Light without tracing it.)  This Spiritualizes the passive elements of Water and Earth, which you will have already been initiated in from the current perspective at this stage of the work.

7.         Make the Sign of Silence, while calling the Holy Name “AGLA” (pronounced Agla).  As you do so, formulate the Macrocosmic Black Pillar of Severity in the place of the Pentagram.

8.         Between the Macrocosmic Pillars you have formulated, make the Sign of Rendering Asunder (Opening) the Veil.  This is made by extending the arms straight before you, hands open and together with palms out, and then spreading the hands apart until they fall by the sides of the body.  In the process, a Portal is opened between these Pillars.

9.         Walk between the Pillars, through the Portal, and return to the foot of the Altar (or the center of your Circle).

10.       Make the Sign of Triumph to declare that you are conquering Typhon.  While in the Sign of Triumph, see the Pillars of the Great Tree and the embodied Little Tree move to the edge of your Magick Circle in the places where the “X” connects to the edge of your Circle.  These form the four Pillars of the Holy Temple.  As this happens, see the Pillars “push back” the elements to the perimeter of your Circle and behind the Pillars, exposing the floor of your Sphere and the Spiritual Plane on which your Sphere resides.  The Lamp of Spirit may be thought of as hanging from the Middle Pillar in the Center of your Circle.

11.       While still in the Sign of Triumph, boldly declare “ABRAHADABRA”.

Perform any other magickal or mystical work on your agenda, always remembering to equilibrate.

Pray to the Holy Guardian Angel for initiation, and give thanks; yea, always give thanks!

When you are ready to close, you may proceed as follows:

1.         Move with intention to the eastern quadrant of your Circle and face west.

2.         Formulate the Portal referred to in Steps 8 and 9 above before you.

3.         Walk through the Portal.

4.         After walking through the Portal, stop and turn around.  Facing the Portal, make the Sign of Closing the Veil.  This is made by extending the arms to the sides of the Portal, hands open, palms facing each other and then bringing the hands together, and then allowing the hands to fall to the sides of the body.  As you make this Sign, see the Portal close.

5.         Make the Sign of Silence.

6.         Complete the closing by repeating the Banishing Earth Pentagram Ritual (using the same formula used to open in Step 1 above), give a License to Depart, and end all in the Sign of Silence absorbing all energies in your Sphere to return your Sphere to “normal” operating condition.

Go forth, transformed, into the World of Man.

The foregoing is a new approach to the Pentagram formulae for the Dominis Liminis, which has been traditionally called the Greater Ritual of the Pentagram.  There are many versions of the Greater Ritual of the Pentagram.  The formulae given above are designed to be more useable by all Children of the Light, and effective from an initiatory perspective.  You are encouraged to experiment with and use these new formulae.

It is unnecessary to project a Spirit Pentagram followed by an Elemental Pentagram in each quarter, as has traditionally been done.  At this stage of the work, the Childe has already been initiated into the elements from the necessary perspective, and the elements will be Spiritualized by the use of the Spirit Pentagrams as described above.

If you would like to work with any one element, to further Spiritualize the element or to come to further know the Spiritualized element from your evolving perspective, simply open the Temple as you know how (opening Steps 1 and 2 above), move into the quadrant assigned to the element according to the Pentagram formula you are using, and proceed as follows:

1.         Trace (or otherwise formulate) the appropriate Invoking Spirit Pentagram (Active when working with the element of Fire or Air, or Passive when working with the element of Water or Earth).

2.         Charge the Spirit Pentagram while calling the appropriate Holy Name (AHIH when using the Active Spirit Pentagram or AGLA when using the Passive Spirit Pentagram).

3.         Trace (or otherwise formulate) over the Spirit Pentagram the appropriate Elemental Pentagram in the proper color light.

4.         Charge the Elemental Pentagram by calling the appropriate God name of the Element (which is the Atziluthic name from the appropriate Divine Hierarchy given above).

5.         Return in the Sign of Silence, but do not absorb these Pentagrams.  Let them blend and stand as one Spiritualized Pentagram shining forth the Spiritualized Element you have evoked from within and invoked from all quarters of your Sphere.

6.         Make the Sign of the Element.  These are as follows:

·        The Sign of Earth is of the God Set Fighting.  This is made by standing with the left foot at a 45 degree angle or so, placing the heal of the right foot in the arch of the left foot, making two fists at the Solar Plexus, palms towards the body, at the same time, extend the right arm up at a 45 degree angle or so opening the hand in the process with the palm out and extend the left arm down at a 45 degree angle or so opening the hand in the process so it is behind the buttocks with the palm out.

·        The Sign of Air is of the God Shu Supporting the Sky.  This is made by standing with the heals together, feet separated at a 45 degree angle or so, raising the arms so the elbows are horizontal with the shoulders, the arms are otherwise extended to the sky, the hands are open with the palms flat to the sky and the fingers pointed to make a straight line from one hand to the other.

·        The Sign of Water is of the Goddess Auramoth.  This is made by bringing the thumb and index finger of each hand together to create a triangle, point down (like the Sigil of Water), with its center slightly above the Solar Plexus over the heart center.

·        The Sign of Fire is of the Goddess Thoum-ash-neith.  This is made by bringing the thumb and index finger of each hand together to create a triangle, point up (like the Sigil of Fire), with its center over the Third Eye.

7.         Perform any other magickal or mystical work on your agenda, always remembering to equilibrate.

8.         When you are ready to close, trace (or otherwise formulate) the appropriate Banishing Spirit Pentagram over the Pentagram beaming in the quadrant you are working.  (This will be an Active Spirit Pentagram if you used an Active Spirit Pentagram in Step 1 above, or a Passive Spirit Pentagram if you used a Passive Spirit Pentagram in Step 1 above.)  Charge it while calling the same name you used in Step 2 above.

9.         Trace (or otherwise formulate) the appropriate Banishing Elemental Pentagram in proper color light over the other Pentagrams.  Charge this Pentagram while calling the same name you used in Step 4 above.

10.       Make the Sign of Silence to absorb these Pentagrams.

11.       Make the Sign of the Element to salute the Element.

Pray to the Holy Guardian Angel for initiation, and give thanks (if you have not already done so).

Close the Temple as you know how.

Go forth, transformed, into the World of Man.

You may creatively use the Signs of the Elements in any of your work with the elements, long before the work of the Dominis Liminis.  They will give you insight into the Elements.

You may also creatively use the Pentagram formulae and rituals given above to work with many of the stars and symbols given in “Table” appended to the Scroll of the Ritual of the Stars and the Guide to the Oaths of Initiation.  The Pentagram Rituals are especially effective when working with the corresponding Tattwas.

May this Scroll assist you in completing the work of the First Order and attaining the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel.  Amen.

Love is the law, love under will.
